Squatters And Mexican Politics
On Day 4 we visited a community of about 40,000 to 50,000 located at an abandoned train station. The people are probably the poorest in all of Cuernavaca. We spent half a day walking around the community. Even in the most extreme poverty the people have hope. The children seem happy and nobody complained...they just explained how it is.
There was a school in the community and the children were so captivated with the smallest things, like a camera. And they laughed and played and never stopped smiling. I couldn't believe it.
Later in the day a political science professor at Mexico's national university gave us a history lesson. What a great speaker Ross Gandy is. He explained how backwards Mexico is. Coca-Cola is the safest and cheapest drink...while water is expensive and most dangerous. Cars are everywhere, public transit is horrible, and the pollution problem is tied for worst in the world.
